Bachelor-Level (Undergraduate Courses)

Norms in International Relations

Lecturer: Nina Wüstemann

What are norms? How can we define them? Why are norms important in international relations and how do they influence international actors? Before applying the idea of norms and their effects to past and present international politics, we’ll aim to conceptualize norms. Although norms can be hard to define due to the wide scope of politics, culture and behavioral standards, which they encompass, we will develop a rough definition to work within the context of this seminar. We will then work with specific concepts of international norms e.g. "R2P" and we´ll analyze how they influence(d) a) the debate about norms in IR and b) the specific behavior of international actors such as the UN. Active participation and good knowledge of the English language are required.

 

The Politics of European Integration

This seminar will introduce students to the European Union, its politics and policies. We will discuss different theories of integration such as neofunctionalism and intergovernmentalism and analyze the institutions of the EU. Is the EU a federal state or simply an international organization shaped by member states? How have theories and concepts changed over time? Special attention will be given to Germany’s role within the EU. What is the role of Germany in the EU and how does the country 33 contribute to, or divert from, further integration. Will the EU be able to cope with the various crises, such as increased migration, nationalist-populism and Brexit? The seminar will combine theoretical models to explain European integration with specific policies and challenges the EU is facing. Students are expected to work on small projects and present their findings. Active participation and good knowledge of the English language are required. This course is particularly designed for international students and students with a focus on Europe.

 

Political Education and Inclusive Citizenship Seminar

Understanding Decolonization The position and function of the subject in a strongly divided post-colonial and post migration world is not yet fixed and defined. All global subjects are postcolonial subjects and require competences for understanding, orientation and positive development of their postcolonial world. The seminar deals with postcolonial subjectification by defining intersectional issues and examining the postcolonial dimension, its variety of manifestations as well as daily life and societal impacts. In contrasting the colonization of the global South on one hand and the neocolonization of the global North on the other hand, the mechanisms, interlinkages and changing forms of oppression are examined and the effects of power and subordination are transformatively explored (i.e. alienation, abstraction, division and stratification). The development of analytical, solidarity and reflexive action competences make it possible to identify and act upon today’s complex challenges and create an alternative inclusive and peaceful world. The seminar links theory and praxis to the development of local, national and global action competences. The burning problem contexts and action fields are identified and articulated including scientific critique and ideas from course participants. Students gain academic knowledge and tools for acting as stewards of change. The multi-layeredness and entanglements of globalization and difference challenge political education and raise basic questions of inclusive citizenship, participation and sustainability. Topics to be covered include: Introduction to intersectionality, gender theories and intersections with categories of difference: Examining scientific gaps, paradoxes and establishing links with inclusive citizenship (3 Credits). Post-colonial theories, key concepts and applications (Theory, presentations and discussions) (3 Credits). Introduction to Lange’s Political Consciousness & Inclusive Citizenship. Central themes of theory, research, methods and their implications and applications to decolonization (presentations and discussions) (3 credits). Interdiscursivity of Intersectionality, Postcolonial Theories and Inclusive citizenship: Mapping the role of Academia and the Subject in Complex Societal Change (Presentations and Discussions) (3 Credits). All themes are theoretically and didactically reflected with an applied reference of school and political education. Prerequisites: Good Knowledge of English. The seminar will take place in English.

Problems of International Organizations

Lecturer: Natalia Dalmer

Tuesday, 12:00 - 14:00, Room V405 (10.04.2018 - 21.07.2018), Seminar (6 ECTS) 

Why do states establish international organizations and delegate parts of their authority to them? To what extent can we conceive of international organizations as actors in their own right with interests and identities? Why do some international organizations exhibit a higher degree of institutionalization than others? Are international organizations only powerful if they possess means of enforcement or do they have other resources through which they can exert influence? And how democratic are international organizations? These and other questions we will ponder over the course of the seminar examining different kinds of organizations and different policy areas. Prerequisites: Good knowledge of theories of international relations and command of the English language.
